EPISODE 9 - FOUND AT SEA

MICHELLE OBERHOLZER

A SNAPSHOT IN TIME

Eastern Cape musicians Dumama and Qhawekazi are Found at Sea. Their music reaches into their indigenous musical heritage, and evolved into transcendental sonic landscapes with their unique, haunting voices that feel both ancient and refreshing at the same time.

Found At Sea, are childhood family friends. Through a sisterhood they collaborated with a musical genesis of their own personal identities as artists.  In 2013 and in 2014, the two decided to dream up and develop Found at Sea, a celebration, exploration and evolution of indigenous sacred sounds, fused with folk, jazz and xhosa-soul.

The objective of this project is to help in the preservation, exploration and celebration of indigenous music and knowledge systems. As Dumama and Qhawekazi explain: “We seek to address national priorities and contribute sustainably towards the important and sensitive process of decolonization, in our capacity, as up and coming musicians. We see it as our priority to preserve the country’s indigenous music, knowledge and wisdom so as to continue to share it and evolve it amongst each other and ultimately the rest of the world.

We made them choose the things they treasure most in the world right now and tell us the stories behind each piece!
